Sept. 21, 2018
Shooting occurred at lunchtime across the street from the CHAMPS Charter High School of the Arts-Multimedia & Performing in the Van Nuys area.

A teacher and a student at a Los Angeles charter school were wounded Thursday in a shooting across the street from the campus.

KABC-TV reports that the shooting occurred shortly after noon outside the CHAMPS Charter High School of the Arts-Multimedia & Performing in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Police say the shooting took place near a fast-food restaurant across the street from the school.

Police say a female teacher and an 11th-grade student were shot and wounded. The student suffered a leg injury, and the teacher suffered an arm injury.

The teacher is in stable condition, and the student was treated and released.

Police do not know if the victims were targeted. Two suspects were taken into custody.

Jordan Duke, the school's communications director, says the shooting occurred during lunch hour, when some students and faculty are offsite.

"Today’s events were unsettling and scary," the school said in a message on its website. "Additional and continued support counseling to our students, parents, and faculty. Counselors and school psychologists will be readily available tomorrow during school. We are here for you."
