A 17-year-old high school student in Jacksonville, Fla., was shot and critically wounded Wednesday morning while walking to his school bus stop.

WJXT-TV reports that the wounded student was able to board the bus, and the driver rushed him to a nearby fire station.

The teen, who attends Westside High School in Jacksonville, was taken from the fire station to a hospital, where he was in surgery.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Lt. Will Janes said a black vehicle approached the boy at about 6:15 a.m. as he was walking  toward his bus stop.

Someone inside opened fire. The student was hit one time, but was able to get to the bus stop and was loaded onto the bus.

Duval County School Board member Scott Shine says the teen was shot in the chest.

Police did not have any description of the shooter.

Shine says two students at the bus stop did not cooperate with officers' questions and tried to take an officer's taser. One of those students was tased and taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Both of those students will be arrested, officials say.

Westside High School Principal Rebecca Raulerson went to the fire station where the other students were being questioned. Most of the 21 students on the bus attend Westside High; one goes to Bridge to Success and another to Frank H. Peterson Academies.
