A 14-year-old boy in Palmdale, Calif., armed with a rifle allegedly shot a former classmate in the arm Friday at a high school.
The Los Angeles Daily News reports that the alleged shooter, a former student at Highland High School in Palmdale, was in custody. The shooting victim, a 15-year-old boy who attends Highland, had undergone surgery for an arm wound and was expected to make a full recovery.
Police say it is unclear if the shooter and victim knew each other. The alleged shooter had recently transferred from Highland to a different school.
The shooter was able to get the rifle into the school, went into a bathroom and fired as many as 10 rounds, police say.
The suspect was caught about an hour after the shooting at a shopping center. He was being held on suspicion of attempted murder. The weapon believed to be used in the shooting was found in a field west of the school
Reports of the shooting and a false report of another attack at a nearby elementary school sparked chaos Friday and drew a massive police response in Palmdale.
Officers descended on Highland High after dozens of 911 calls and inaccurate reports that there were hostages in the campus library.
On Monday, students returned to school.
"We are prepared for all students to return to school Monday," the Antelope Valley Union High School District stated on its website. "Additional counselors, psychologists and staff will be available at all our campuses to provide support."
