A 19-year-old university student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a campus police officer at the campus police station.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports that the student, identified as Hollis Daniels, a freshman from Seguin, Texas, had been brought into the station for questioning Monday night in a drug-related case when the shooting occurred.
The officer who died has been identified as Floyd East Jr.
Authorities say East took Daniels into custody for possession of a controlled substance. Officers found evidence of drugs along with drug paraphernalia upon entering Daniels’ room.
"Texas Tech Police Officers brought a suspect to the police station for standard debriefing," the university said on its emergency communications center webpage. "During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer."
The suspect ran away, and the campus was placed on lockdown. He later was apprehended by campus police in a parking lot near the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
Daniels has confessed to killing the officer, according to an arrest warrant.
At the scene of the arrest, Daniels told officers "that he was the one that shot their friend,” a police report states.
Once in custody, Daniels told police he “did something illogical.”
