Staff member at Massachusetts school dies after altercation with student

A staff member at a Swansea, Massachusetts, school died Thursday after being kicked by a student who was trying to leave the school without permission.

NBCBoston.com reports that Amy Morrell, 53, died Thursday after being hospitalized overnight following an altercation at Meadowridge Academy, a residential school for youth and young adults with mental health, behavioral and trauma issues. Morrell worked at Meadowridge as a direct care staff member.

Authorities say a 14-year-old girl was trying to leave her residence at the school Wednesday evening without permission. The girl, whose identity has not been disclosed, got into a struggle with staff members, including Morrell, who were trying to restrain her. The girl allegedly kicked Morrell in the chest, causing her to collapse.

Morrell was taken to a local hospital, where she died Thursday morning.

Prosecutors said the girl has been arraigned in Fall River Juvenile Court on a charge of assault and battery causing serious injury.
