Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colorado, remains closed this week after a student shot and wounded two of his classmates last week before fatally shooting himself.
The Denver Post reports that officials in the Jefferson County district say several security measures will be put in place at the high school before it reopens.
Evergreen Principal Skyler Artes and Jefferson County Superintendent Tracy Dorland said in a letter to families that the school district has committed to the following:
- A full-time school resource officer provided by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office,
- A full-time, armed Jeffco safety and security officer,
- Dedicated JeffCo safety and security patrols in the Evergreen area,
- Additional support for the Evergreen High School administrative team,
- Dedicated and floating substitute teachers for staff,
- Additional office staff and dedicated, on-site communications support for timely responses,
- Additional mental health support for students and staff.
The shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon. The shooter, identified as Desmond Holly, 16, opened fire with a revolver and wounded two other students before shooting himself.
Desmond died from his injuries. One of the wounded students was reported in serious condition, and the other was reported in critical condition.
Social media accounts that appeared to belong to Desmond embraced white supremacist views and referred to mass shootings and Holocaust denial.
The shooting is the 47th that has taken place at a school in the United States this year — 24 on college campuses and 23 on K-12 school grounds.
Evergreen is about 28 miles southwest of Denver.
