A shooting at a University of New Mexico residence hall has killed a 14-year-old boy and wounded a 19-year-old man.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the shooting occurred early Friday in the Casas del Rio housing complex on the Albuquerque campus. Michael Lamotte, 14, was fatally shot in the head.

The alleged shooter, John Fuentes, 18, was arrested after a lengthy search and has been charged with murder, aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence.

Four people, including the suspect, were playing video games inside a residence hall room  when the shooting took place, police said. Authorities did not discover the shooting until 2:30 a.m., when the 19-year-old arrived at a hospital and said he had been shot.

Police say surveillance video showed Fuentes meeting with another teen, who had a residence hall room leased at the university. New students have been visiting the campus as part of scheduled orientations ahead of the fall semester.

Police said at 10:20 p.m., the two were joined by Lamotte and his half-brother before all four walked toward the Gila Dormitory.

The half-brother told police they had been playing video games in the residence hall when Fuentes opened fire.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting.
