Feb. 19, 2024
Police say the 16-year-old student at Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy is in stable condition after being shot.

A 16-year-old boy who brought a gun into his high school in Mesquite, Texas, was in stable condition after being shot by police.

NBCDFW.com reports that three police officers opened fire on the student, who was holding a firearm and refusing to put it down. The boy, whose identity was not disclosed, was reported in stable condition at a local hospital, police said.

The shooting occurred Monday morning at Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy, a charter school.

Mesquite Police were dispatched just before 9 a.m. after an administrator reported a student was in the school office with a firearm in his hands and he was refusing to put it down.

Police arrived and tried to persuade the teenager to put the gun down, but he refused.

"During the process of negotiating, an officer-involved shooting occurred," police said in a prepared statement.

The three officers shot at the teenager, and afterward he "complied with commands and was taken into custody," police said.

Police did not say what happened in the moments before the officers opened fire and have not said how many times the boy was wounded. Police also have not said if the student fired his gun.

According to police, no other injuries were reported.
