Students and staff noticed the animal under a desk after it had wandered into an English classroom, reports The Mercury News. A custodian contained the animal inside the classroom by closing the door.
The animal, later determined to be a puma, was captured by mid-afternoon and taken to the Oakland Zoo for a health assessment, said Ken Paglia, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Game.
Paglia said the mountain lion was four to six months old and underweight at roughly 40 pounds.
Officials didn’t know how the animal entered the building.
