Parents of alleged Oxford High School shooter held on bond of $500,000 each after allegedly trying to flee

Dec. 6, 2021
Jennifer and James Crumbley have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with actions that led up to the fatal shooting last week in Oxford, Mich.

The parents of a teen charged with killing four students at an Oxford, Mich., school are each being held on a $500,000 bond after being arrested over the weekend

The Associated Press reports that James and Jennifer Crumbley were found Saturday hiding in a building in Detroit, a day after they were charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the Nov. 30 shooting that was allegedly carried out by their 15-year-old son.

Ethan Crumley, a sophomore at Oxford High School, is facing murder and other charges after he allegedly brought a gun to the school and opened fire. Four students were shot to death, and seven others were injured.

After investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, the Oakland County Prosecutor brought involuntary manslaughter charges against the Crumbleys.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said the parents committed “egregious” acts, such as buying a gun for their son, and resisting the school administrators' request to remove him from school a few hours before the shooting,

After the Crumbleys failed to turn themselves in on Friday, authorities initiated a search. A tip on Saturday led them to a building in Detroit, about 40 miles south of Oxford.

Asserting that they were a flight risk, prosecutors requested a high bond for the Crumbleys. Judge Julie Nicholson agreed and set bond for each of the parents at $500,000.
