Ann Arbor (Mich.) district detects asbestos in 2 elementary schools, 1 high school

Asbestos may have been disturbed during construction work at the schools.

The Ann Arbor (Mich.) district has found asbestos in one of its high schools.

State inspectors were on the scene Tuesday to find out if workers and kids have been exposed from the exposure at Community High School, reports WXYZ Detroit.

Community High School has been undergoing construction since last spring and now there are concerns that asbestos may have been disturbed during demolition work there.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) also has been investigating reports of asbestos exposure at two Ann Arbor elementary schools.

Tests in November and July showed asbestos-containing materials were found inside Angell and Burns Park elementary schools.

After the August asbestos tests, the schools were given an all-clear; no asbestos was found on the items tested.

But WXYZ reports that a teacher at Community High did an independent test that was positive for asbestos. That prompted another round of district testing inside the high school earlier this month that detected asbestos inside a storage room that’s part of a science classroom.

The district says in a statement that once it "was informed of the potential concern, the district immediately began taking the appropriate followup steps to ensure health and safety. We appreciate anytime we hear concerns so that we can effectively take the steps necessary to resolve the issue."
