Student killed, police officer wounded in shooting at Knoxville, Tenn., high school

A teen-aged boy at Austin-East Magnet High was fatally shot and a police officer was wounded during an exchange of gunfire in a school bathroom.

A student was shot to death and a police office wounded Monday a a high school in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that the shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School resulted in the death of a teen-aged boy.

David Rausch, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said that an armed student was holed up in a school bathroom. When officers entered the bathroom, the student fired at them, striking one officer. The student was killed by return fire from police.

The wounded police officer reportedly is the Austin-East school resource officer. He was shot in the hip.

Knoxville Police Chief Eve Thomas said the officer who was shot was in serious condition and underwent surgery Monday night. 

Austin-East will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

"What happened here today is a terrible tragedy, and I’m heartbroken that this awful incident occurred in one of our schools,” said Knox County Schools Superintendent Bob Thomas.
