Kavion Poplous, 18, allegedly shot his roommate in Thompson Hall at Western Illinois in Macomb.

A Western Illinois University freshman wanted in the shooting of his roommate in a residence hall has turned himself in to police in Chicago.

CBS News Chicago reports that Kavion Poplous, 18, surrendered Wednesday afternoon at the Gresham District station on Chicago's South Side. The shooting occurred Tuesday night on the Western Illinois campus in Macomb, about 220 miles west of Chicago.

The university had identified Poplous as the student who allegedly shot and injured his roommate in the Thompson Hall residence hall after an “incident related to a roommate dispute.” At the same time, officials said a fire alarm was pulled and the building was evacuated.

The shooting victim has been hospitalized and has undergone surgery. Officials have not disclosed his identity or his condition.

An arrest warrant for Poplous charges him with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Family members say the teen had just graduated from Wendell Phillips Academy High School in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood and got a scholarship to the university. They say he was being bullied and there was an ongoing conflict with his roommate. His mom tried contacting staff for mediation, but she said nothing happened.

The university canceled classes on Wednesday, and closed its Macomb and Quad Cities campuses in response to the shooting.
