Two students at a Hawaii high school have been injured after they were stabbed on campus, allegedly by a fellow student.

The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports that that the victims, a girl and a boy, both 16, attend Mililani High School in Mililani, Hawaii. They were reported to be in serious condition at a local hospital and are expected to recover.

The alleged assailant, also a student, is in custody.

Police did not disclose the identities of the students involved in the incident.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. Monday during recess.

Hawaii Schools Superintendent Christina Kishimoto said in a statement that the department’s priority is supporting the students and families of those affected by the incident.

“We are committed to ensuring that our schools continue to be safe spaces for learning, and as such the well-being of our students and staff remains our highest priority,” she said. “This is an evolving situation and we ask that the public please refrain from spreading misinformation.

Students from the school told KITV-TV that the stabbing was the result of a love triangle.

Witnesses say they saw the suspect use a hunting knife with molded brass knuckles to stab the girl. The girl's boyfriend tried to wrestle the knife from the suspect and was injured in the process.
