Shooting victim at Dallas high school basketball game dies from injuries

Jan. 21, 2020
Marc Strickland, 18, was wounded during a game between two Dallas high schools.

An 18-year-old shot earlier this month at a high school basketball game in Dallas has died from his injuries, police say.

NBCDFW.com reports that Marc Strickland, who was taken to an area hospital in critical condition after the Jan. 11 shooting at Ellis Davis Field House, died Saturday.

A 15-year-old had been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the shooting; that charge has been upgraded to murder.

The shooting happened just after 9 p.m. Jan. 11 during a basketball game between Kimball and South Oak Cliff high schools in the Dallas district.

Investigators say the shooting took place after a fight broke out inside the field house. A Dallas school district police officer was grazed by a fragment and had injuries that were not life-threatening.

Following the shooting, Dallas School Superintendent Michael Hinojosa announced several changes to security at district sporting events. As of Monday, only clear bags will be allowed into sporting events. The district also will use wand metal detectors as people enter district sporting events.

Officials say they also will try to scheduled more basketball games at one of the team's home gyms, instead of at a neutral location, and to add "weapon detection devices."
