A North Carolina sheriff's deputy has been fired after surveillance video caught him slamming a middle school student to the ground twice last week.

CBS News reports that the incident occurred on Dec. 12 at Vance County Middle School in Henderson, about 40 miles north of Raleigh.

In the video, the deputy, who was assigned to the school as a resource officer, is seen walking a 11-year-old student down a hallway and then suddenly stopping, slamming the student to the ground twice, and dragging him through the corridor.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. The deputy's identity has not been disclosed.

WRAL-TV reports that Vance County School Superintendent Anthony Jackson held a news conference to apologize to the community for the treatment the boy received.

"We will work tirelessly to ensure that this never happens again to another child in our school system," Jackson says.

He described the incident caught on video as "an unacceptable and egregious act."

Pastor John Miles, the boy's grandfather, says he believes the officer should face criminal charges for his actions against the boy.

"I don't care what happened. My grandson should never have been attacked by a grown man that we trust in law enforcement," Miles says.
