March 19, 2019
Police say the man was sleeping in a campus building and started a fight with officers who were called to the scene.

A man who started a fight with campus police at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was shot and wounded by campus police Tuesday morning.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the man was shot after getting into an altercation with two university police officers responding to a report of a man sleeping in the Fine Arts Building on campus.

He was taken to a local hospital and his condition is described as "stable," University Police Chief Joe LeMire says.

LeMire says the two officers responded a little before 7 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a man sleeping in the Fine Arts Building.

As they tried to get the man to leave the building, a fight broke out, and police discovered the man had a weapon. In the course of the altercation, one of the officers shot the man.

The shooting victim is not a student or employee at the university;.

No one else was injured in the incident. The school is on spring break this week, but buildings and offices are open.
