Student flees high school classroom in South Carolina after gun falls from his book bag

Nov. 14, 2018
Police apprehended the 18-year-old student from Newberry High in Newberry, S.C., a couple of hours after the incident.

A student at a South Carolina high school fled from the campus Tuesday morning after a gun and a loaded magazine fell out of his book bag. Police apprehended him a couple of hours later.

The Columbia State reports that the incident happened at Newberry High School in Newberry, S.C., just before 11 a.m, police say. A student was opening his book bag in a classroom when a semiautomatic pistol fell out and onto the floor.

The student, Anthony Q. Blakely, 18, grabbed the gun and fled. A surveillance video showed him leaving the school and driving off.

He was taken into custody by Newberry County sheriff’s deputies on Interstate 26.

Authorities say the teacher in the classroom alerted the other students and “began to attempt to take control” when the student grabbed the gun and ran from the classroom.

School administrators placed the school on lockdown, and law enforcement was notified.

No one was injured and no shots were fired.
