3 students seriously wounded in shooting outside a high school in Chicago

Sept. 11, 2018
Police say they have no motive for the shooting, which occurred shortly after dismissal Monday afternoon at Chatham Academy High School.

Police in Chicago are questioning two people of interest in the shooting of three students who were shot Monday afternoon as they left a high school on the city's South Side.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the victims—16, 17 and 18—were shot near Chatham Academy High School around 4 p.m. Two of them, bleeding badly, rushed back into the school, and the third was found in an alley nearby, according to the school's principal.

"Two students made it back to the school, to the cafeteria, looking for assistance and support," said the principal, Tony Qadir Lyons. ''They are taught that if they're in the area and they have an issue to come back to the school for a safe haven."

The 16-year-old old was shot in the left shoulder, the 17-year-old in the upper left leg, and the 18-year-old in the right arm and left armpit, police say. Two of the teens were in critical condition Tuesday at a local hospital, WBBM-TV reports. The third victim's condition had stabilized.

Police say they have no motive for the shooting.

Lyons says students were let out of school around 3:55 p.m. A large group of kids were walking near the school when someone came running out of a gangway and opened fire into the crowd.

The shooting occurred about four blocks from where a 21-year-old man was shot earlier in the day. Detectives were investigating whether the shootings may be connected.
