Aug. 21, 2018
2 adults and an 11-year-old girl were killed and 2 younger children were seriously injured in the Sunday night crash at Fairview Elementary School.

An 11-year-old girl has died from injuries suffered in an auto crash at a Lansing, Mich., school building that killed her mother and the mother's boyfriend.

The Lansing State Journal reports that the girl, whose name was not disclosed, was a passenger in an SUV that crashed head on into Fairview Elementary School in Lansing at about 11 p.m. Sunday.

The mother, Gardenia Herrera, 36, and her boyfriend, Jose Angel Aguilera, 43, were killed in the crash. Aguilera was driving, and police say they believe alcohol played a role in the accident.

Two other children of Herrera—a girl, 10, and a boy, 5—were hospitalized in stable condition, police say.

The family was visiting Lansing from Texas.

The car hit the northwest side of the school, police spokesman Robert Merritt says. Construction crews used a sheet of wood to cover the damage, which is near the back of the school in the center area behind the playground.

Fairview Elementary recently underwent a $16.3 million renovation.
