3 dead in shooting at New Mexico high school

Two students shot to death at Aztec High in Aztec, N.M. The shooter also is dead.

Two students at Aztec High School in Aztec, N.M.were shot to death Thursday morning at the school by a gunman who later died at the scene.

The Farmington Daily Times reports that Casey J. Marquez, a senior, and Francisco I. Fernandez, a junior, were identified by authorities as the victims in the attack.

Authorities confirmed that the shooter was male, but did not disclose whether he was killed by his own hand or taken down by another. They also would not confirm whether the shooter was a student at the school, despite earlier reports that he was.

The New Mexico State Police say that no one else was injured. Earlier reports had said that as many as 15 other had been injured. 

Police have not disclosed the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Aztec Police Chief Mike Heal said two officers responded to and entered the school within a minute of the first reports, and before the school was locked down. 

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said there were several acts of bravery and heroism on behalf of school staff, students and first responders. 

The school was placed on lockdown, and students and staff were cleared from the campus as police searched the school room by room. School buses transported students to a park in Farmington, about 20 miles away.

The city of Aztec is the county seat of San Juan County in northwest New Mexico.
