A man who drove his car onto the Ohio State University campus was killed Monday morning by police after he attacked several people with his car and a butcher knife.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that the man struck pedestrians with the vehicle, then exited the vehicle with a butcher knife and started cutting people. Nine people were injured.
Less than a minute after the attack began, a university police officer shot the suspect to death. Police and campus officials say the dead man was the only person involved in carrying out the attack.
UPDATE: Authorities have identified the dead man as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, who was a first-year student at Ohio State. He was born in Somalia and was living in the United States as a legal permanent resident, The Associated Press reports.
The incident happened outside Watts Hall on the Columbus campus. Earlier in the morning, the building had been evacuated because of a report of a gas leak. It's unclear if that was related to the attack.
Officials say nine victims were taken to local hospitals. Wexner Medical Center treated five patients: two were stabbed, two were hit by the car and one whose injuries still were being assessed. Two victims with lacerations were taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. Two victims who were struck by the car were taken to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Ohio State Emergency Management officials announced on Twitter at about 11:30 a.m. Eastern time that the shelter-in-place order imposed on campus had been lifted. "Scene is now secure," the tweet said. "All classes are canceled on Columbus campus for the remainder of the day."
The campus is open, but several buildings in the vicinity of the incident have been closed for the day.
The university had issued an alert of an active shooter around 10 a.m. A message on Twitter stated: "Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College."
Columbus Police, Ohio State police and Franklin County sheriff's deputies are investigating the attack.
