One student was fatally shot and another injured early Sunday on the campus of Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The university said that Anthony White Jr., 19, of Charlotte, N.C., was shot at about 1:20 a.m. in a parking near Wilson Hall, a campus residence hall.

A second student, a woman who was not identified, was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

UPDATE: A former Winston-Salem State University student has been charged in connection with the shooting death of a student on campus early Sunday morning, WXII-TV says.

Students held a vigil on campus Sunday night in White's memory, and the university police department doubled its presence on campus in the aftermath of the violence.

Officials decided that classes would be held Monday on a normal schedule.

"We want to assure our students, faculty, and staff that we are doing all we can to ensure their safety, and would not hesitate to suspend normal activity if we had any information or evidence that a current credible threat to campus persisted," the university said in a statement on its web site. "While we can never guarantee the campus is threat free, we can say that we have canvassed every area on campus since the incident, and find no evidence for the campus to remain in a lockdown or suspended operations mode.
