A 74-year-old substitute teacher in Alabama has been arrested after a gun he was carrying in his pocket discharged in a classroom of first-grade students.
Al.com reports that Henry Rex Weaver faces charges of reckless endangerment, third-degree aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on school grounds.
Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey said one student sustained a slight injury after being struck by a fragment. The student was treated on the scene by the school nurse.
County Sheriff Mark Moon says the incident occurred Friday at Blountsville Elementary School in Blountsville, Ala..
Moon says Weaver allegedly had the gun in his pocket when it discharged. Students were in the classroom at the time.
“Obviously I’m concerned about a substitute teacher bring a gun to school,’’ Moon says, “and what we can do to prevent that in the future.”
