States with highest K-12 per pupil expenditure, fiscal 2018

In 2017-18, public school districts in the United States spent an average of $12,654 per pupil.

School districts in New York state spent the most per pupil in 2017-18, according to a new report from the National Center for Education Statistics.

The report, "Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary Education: FY 18," says that public school systems in New York spent an average of $23,686 per pupil.

The nationwide average for per pupil expenditure in fiscal 2018 was $12,654. That represents a 0.9% increase over the previous year, the NCES says.

Of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, here are the 10 highest per-pupil expenditures in fiscal 2018.
