Get a Clue: Most popular plays produced in high school, 2019-20

Aug. 11, 2020
The work inspired by the iconic board game was the full-length play staged most often by high school drama students.

Many school activities fell by the wayside earlier this year when the coronavirus pandemic shuttered classrooms across the world.

But before schools abruptly closed, high school theater departments were staging productions as usual. And, according to the Educational Theatre Association, the full-length play performed most often by high school thespians in 2019-20 was Clue.

The association says that Clue achieved its top ranking in its second year of amateur licensing. It beat out Almost, Maine, which had ranked first for the previous five years.

“Newly licensed shows made their mark in both the play and musical categories last season, indicating an appetite among teachers and students for expanding the repertoire in school theatre programs,” says Christa Skiles, the association’s editor of publications.

Here are the 10 full-length plays produced most often in high schools in 2019-20.

  • 1 Clue
  • 2 Almost, Maine
  • 3 A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • 4 Peter and the Starcatcher
  • 5 Radium Girls
  • 6 Twelve Angry Jurors
  • 7 She Kills Monsters
  • 8 Puffs, Or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic
  • 9 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
  • 10 Romeo and Juliet
