States that receive the highest percentage of revenue from federal sources, fiscal 2018

Alaska was the most dependent on federal revenue; 15.8% of its funds came from federal sources.

School districts receive most of their funding from local and state sources, but they also receive money directly from federal sources. According to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, public elementary and secondary schools get an average of 7.7% from the federal government.

Federal support ranges from a high of 15.8% in Alaska to a low of 3.9% in Massachusetts.

Here are the states that receive the highest percentage of revenue from the federal government:
