Most popular musicals produced by high schools, 2018-19

The Education Theatre Association says The Addams Family was the musical produced most often by high schools.

The Addams Family was the musical performed most often in high school productions in 2018-19, the Educational Theatre Association says.

Playbill reports that the list of popular high school musical productions is the result of a survey completed by more than 3,000 high schools.

Musicals making their first appearance on the list were Mamma Mia! and Newsies. Those works were newly available for licensing this school year.

The surveyed schools reported an average of 10 performances per production (26,534 performances in total), with an average total audience of 1,806. Based on that data, the association estimates that U.S. high schools serve a total potential audience of 48.1 million.
