Nationwide, local school districts received more than $55.6 billion from the federal government for programs such as Title I, special education and child nutrition.

Figures from the National Center for Education Statistics show that California, the largest state, received the most federal funding—more than $7.7 billion. In 17 states, the federal government provided more than $1 billion for local school districts.
