Between May 2009 and May 2015, the U.S. economy had a net gain of more than 800,000 STEM jobs.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2017 report, "STEM Occupations: Past, Present, and Future," the job category that saw the largest increase in that period was the computer systems design and related services industry, which added more than 300,000 jobs.
The dearth of qualified workers available to fill jobs in fields related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics is why business leaders, policy makers and educators have placed greater emphasis on developing curricula and providing facilities that help schools and universities train future generations of STEM employees.
