Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge ranks as the nation's top higher education institution, according to an analysis by the Wallet Hub website.

The website came up with its rankings by comparing 973 U.S. colleges and universities in seven key areas: student selectivity, cost & financing, faculty resources, campus safety, campus experience, educational outcomes and career outcomes.

Using a 100-point scale, the analysts determined a score for each institution. MIT received a score of 81.52

Among the data used for the analysis: admission rate, students' ACT and SAT scores, costs, student loan debt, student-faculty ratio, class size, share of full-time professors among full-time instructional staff, on-campus crime, retention rates, graduation rates, and post-attendance median salary for former students.

Here are the 10 colleges and universities with the highest scores in the WalletHub assessment.
