Fairfield University is renovating and expanding its recreation facility

Dec. 4, 2015
$22 million project will address students' growing demand for fitness and recreation space

Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., is carrying out a $22 million renovation of its Leslie C. Quick, Jr., Recreation Complex.

The project, with an expected completion date of August 2016, will renovate the 40,000-square-foot facility, which was built in 1979, and add 13,000 square feet.

The facility upgrade will help Fairfield meet the increasing demand for fitness and recreation programs at the university. Officials say the “RecPlex,” as it is known on campus, is used by more than 90 percent of Fairfield’s 5,000 students.

Plans for the improved facility call for the entry-level floor to have strength training suites with modern equipment, and an upgraded field house with interchangeable basketball, tennis and volleyball courts.

The upper level will have a cardio training suite and an elevated indoor track. The lower level will have a 25-meter swimming pool; group fitness areas for yoga, pilates, bar method and other exercise programs; a wellness suite; an upgraded racquetball court, an improved multipurpose room and renovated locker rooms.

The university says it has raised $17 million of the $22 million needed for the renovation project. A $10 million donation by alumnus John C. Meditz and a $5 million gift from an anonymous donor have provide a majority of the funding, the university says.
