The University of Colorado Boulder has reopened its Hellems Arts and Sciences building after a two-year, $105.2 million renovation.
The Daily Camera reports That the renovation prioritized restoration and reuse, achieving an estimated 68% reduction in energy use, even with the addition of air conditioning. Sustainability upgrades include high-efficiency HVAC systems, triple-pane windows and improved insulation.
The more-than-100-year-old building was built in 1921; the east and west wings were completed in 1938.
Classrooms were reimagined to encourage active learning and collaboration, and study spaces and common areas were designed to promote comfort, flexibility and community.
Also included in the renovation is the Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre. The upgraded venue has improved accessibility, modern amenities and enhanced audience experiences.
About 85% of undergraduate students take at least one class in Hellems during their time at CU Boulder, and 56% of all first-year students take a class in Hellems in their first semester.
The renovation created ADA-compliant entrances on all sides of the building, made all restrooms ADA-compliant and upgraded the Mary Rippon Theatre for ADA compliance. The project was funded through a combination of university dollars and money from the state.
