Michigan State University has completed a $37.1 million renovation of the oldest operating residence hall on the East Lansing campus.
The Lansing State Journal reports that Campbell Hall, built in 1939, has living space for 245 students, most of them enrolled in Michigan State's Honors College.
"This renovated hall isn't just a new home for the Honors College and our students," says Honors College Interim Dean Glenn Chambers. "It's a space for the entire campus to come together. Campbell Hall is more than bricks and mortar. It's a symbol of what's possible when you come together across disciplines and across generations."
University trustees authorized Campbell’s renovation in February 2024. Goals included preserving the hall’s historic character while improving accessibility, safety and student-centered spaces.
Key pieces of the renovation included a new elevator, accessible entrance ramp, energy-efficient windows, roofing and sprinkling upgrades, building access system, and “versatile” spaces for studying, gathering, practicing music, wellness and academic programs.
Campbell rooms also received new flooring, paint, and furniture, and the bathrooms benefited from renovations.
