Construction delays will force Utah middle school to pivot to online classes
Key Highlights
- Construction delays at Eastmont Middle School will push the start of in-person classes to at least Labor Day 2025.
- The $13 million renovation project is behind schedule.
- Key facilities such as restrooms, wifi, and cafeteria access are incomplete.
Construction delays at a middle school in Sandy, Utah, will force students to begin 2025-26 with remote instruction.
The Canyons District said crews working on renovations at Eastmont Middle School will need several extra weeks to complete the $13 million project.
Teachers and students will pivot to online learning until at least Labor Day.
“Due to construction delays, Eastmont Middle won’t be ready in time for the start of school," the district said in a message to families. "Some key and instructional items — such as ceiling tiles, beams, working restrooms, drinking fountains, schoolwide wifi, projectors, and cafeteria access — are not yet in place. Simply put, the renovation project is not completed to the point that it would be safe for our students to the building.”
Eastmont students can check out a Chromebook from the bottom floor of the school, which is safe to occupy and will be open to the public, personnel and students while crews work on the renovation projects on the middle and top floors.
On Monday, Aug. 18 — the first day of the school year — sixth- through eighth-grade students at Eastmont will attend classes online.
The auditorium and other parts of the bottom floor of the school building will be open for students to use if they do not have Internet access at their homes.
