A Christian high school is set to open later this summer in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Omaha World-Herald reports that Omaha Christian High School will open in September in a former government office building. The school will begin with around 100 students, said Christi Krehbiel, head of school.
Plans for the school developed through conversations between the Omaha Christian Academy, which Krehbiel previously led, and Lifegate Church. The academy, which served all grade levels, was outgrowing its building, and Lifegate, which had a school serving kindergarten through eighth grade, had long talked about forming a high school, Krehbiel said.
Omaha Christian High School will be a separate school from Omaha Christian Academy, but many of the students at the new school will have attended Omaha Christian Academy. Going forward, both Omaha Christian Academy and Lifegate will offer grades K-8 and feed into the new high school.
Extensive renovations to transform the school's building from office space to school are nearly complete. Omaha Christian High School will initially occupy the lower two floors of the building; a government agency continues to rent the top floor. The renovated space has several classrooms, art and music rooms, a chapel and cafeteria space, a spot for an auto shop class on the lower level and several spaces designed for students to collaborate.
The Omaha Christian High School building will have a capacity of just over 300 students. Eventually, school leaders hope to construct a second building on the site to increase the capacity to about 600 students.
