The Illinois State University Board of Trustees has authorized spending up to $41.5 million to build a College of Engineering campus on Bloomington’s east side.

25NewsNow reports that the campus will be built on land the university bought last year from insurance company Country Financial for $17.5 million.

The Board of Trustees’ action covers the first phase of the project; an estimated $34.7 million will be spent to renovate the property, and $6.8 million will be used to create classrooms and labs, and acquire audio-visual equipment.

The staff’s report said the initial phase will accommodate 600 new engineering students, and a second phase will provide space for more than 1,000 students.

“Illinois State University plans to expand its curriculum to address workforce needs in Illinois, the Midwest, and beyond to include bachelor’s degree programs in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and general engineering,” the staff’s report said.
