The Global Learning Charter Public School, in New Bedford, Mass., will renovate a former convent and create the Joan and Irwin Jacobs STEAM Education Center.
The former St. Anthony's convent is adjacent to the school's main building and will provide additional classroom space, reports Boston Real Estate Times.
Prior to 2019-20, the school was split between two campuses about two miles apart, and high school students had to split their time between the campuses,
The additional classroom space will consist of science labs, dedicated art and music space, foreign language classrooms, multiuse classrooms and teacher and community collaboration space.
The project will cost about $8.5 million, school officials said.
The funds will come from fundraising efforts, individual donors and private foundations.
Construction is expected to be complete in 2022.
The charter school, which serves about 500 students in grades five to 12, is leasing both its main building and the convent from the Catholic Diocese of Fall River.
Arrowstreet is the architect and CMS, Construction Monitoring Services, Inc. is the construction manager for the project.
