Jackson County (Mich.) Intermediate district transforms former elementary into special education space

Cognitively and emotionally impaired students, those with autism and older, transitioning students are expected to occupy the building.

A former elementary school in the Jackson County (Mich.) district is being transformed into a centralized location for special education programs

Thanks to state funding, the Jackson County Intermediate District will convert the former Frost Elementary campus in Jackson to a school for special needs students, reports MLive Michigan

The state budget has allocated $10 million for the project. The money is appropriated through a Michigan enhancement grant for “HVAC upgrades and renovations at an elementary school,” via Senate Bill 82.

The district plans to use the funding toward the first phase of renovations in the Frost school building after working out a deal this summer to buy the property from the Jackson (Mich.) school district for $1.

The building will get a new HVAC system, roof repairs and reconfiguration of some of the building's spaces. The entire renovation of the building is expected to cost between $14 million and $15 million.

Intermediate District officials say they rent space all over the county to provide classrooms for special education students.

The Frost building will accommodate programs for cognitively and emotionally impaired students, those with autism and older, transitioning students.
