The Superior (Wis.) district has held a groundbreaking ceremony for a $57 million renovation of the district's high school.

The Superior Telegram reports that in the first phase of the project, the district is constructing a three-story academic building that will be completed in 2018.

Students will move into the new building for the 2018-19 school year, and the existing "circle," cafeteria and office area of campus will be demolished.

"Superior High School was built in the 1960s when the expectations for learning were vastly different than they are today," Superior District Superintendent Janna Stevens said at the groundbreaking ceremony.

"We now live in a time where accountability for learning is at its highest. We live in an age where technology is simply a part of the everyday work...for students and staff. Our staff and students need adequate space as well as appropriate design in all of our classrooms to meet the various needs and expectations of all learners."

Demolition work is scheduled to begin May 9 with the school's locker rooms.

The architect is LHB, and the builder is Kraus-Anderson.
