Texas delays opening of new high school by a year

The Del Valle district will not open North Del Valle High until 2028 because of unfinished roads.

Key Highlights

  • The high school had been scheduled to open in 2027.
  • The developer responsible for road construction has failed to secure funding.
  • - The district will have ninth graders attend Del Valle High School for the 2027-28 school year instead.

A high school that had been set to open next year in Del Valle, Texas, has been delayed by another year, the school district says.

KXAN-TV reports that the setback for North Del Valle High was triggered by “factors outside of the district’s control;" specifically, an unfinished road.

Ninth graders who were to open 2027-28 at North Del Valle High School will instead attend Del Valle High School.

“Under the district’s agreement with the developer of Whisper Valley, the developer is responsible for completing critical infrastructure needed to provide safe access to the campus, including the surrounding roadways,” the district said. “This obligation has not been met.”

According to the district, the developer hasn’t “secured the necessary funding” and is in default of its agreement. The cost to build the road “exceeds $12.3 million,” the district said.

“Using additional taxpayer dollars for the roadway work would not be a responsible use of district funds,” the district asserted. “School districts are not designed or funded to construct or operate public roadways, and taking on this obligation would place an inappropriate financial burden on local taxpayers while diverting resources away from student needs.”

Del Valle broke ground on the high school in 2023.
