Augusta University is building a dental school in Savannah, Ga.
Augusta University has broken ground on a Dental College of Georgia location on Georgia Southern University's Armstrong campus in Savannah.
The Savannah Morning News reports that the 185,000-square-foot facility is backed by a $178 million state investment that leaders say will boost the number of dental providers in the state. The new school is slated to open in summer 2028.
The new dental school, once fully operational, is expected to produce 50 dentists and 20 dental hygienists each year. That is in addition to the 100 dentists produced by the Dental College of Georgia's home campus in Augusta.
Georgia ranks 46th in the United States in dental providers per capita, according to data from Augusta University; 21 counties in 2025 did not have a dentist, according to a Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce report.
The facility will be built on the south end of the Armstrong Campus at the site of the former Armstrong State University baseball field.
