The Johnston County (North Carolina) district has broken ground on a new Clayton High School in Clayton.
The Johnson County Report says the 278,000-square-foot facility will accommodate 2,000 students in grades ninen to 12. The building will have a three-story academic wing alongside a two-story arts and athletics wing.
“The rebuild of Clayton High School is a monumental investment in our students and our community,” said Superintendent David Pearce.
The school will have 99 teaching spaces, 19 career and technical education classes asnd labs, 13 science labs, a main and auxiliary gym, athletic fields and an auditorium with a seating capacity of 762.
The design preserves elements of the school’s historic culture. Clayton High was established in 1901. In December 1955, the first of the buildings now occupied by Clayton High was completed.
The district expects that construction of the school building itself will be completed by December 2027; completion of the entire campus is targeted for fall 2028.
