Officials in Saco, Maine, have broken ground on a $140 million elementary school campus.
The Portland Press Herald reports that the new campus will consist of two facilities: one for pre-K and kindergarten, and another for students in first through fifth grades. The state will pay for $100 million of the project, and Saco is responsible for the remainder.
The new buildings are projected to be completed in time for the 2028-29 school year.
Saco elementary students now are spread across three schools: Young School, Fairfield School and C.K. Burns School, as well as a separate pre-K program. When the new buildings open, all elementary students will be housed on the same campus.
After the new buildings are complete, the Young and Fairfield schools are expected to be torn down. The C.K. Burns School, however, is more than 100 years old and considered a historic building; its future remains up in the air.
The new schools will have improved technology, unified art spaces, indoor and outdoor cafeterias, and multiple outdoor areas for learning and play.
