A former Covid testing site in the Queens section of New York City is now home to a $178.85 million state-of-the-art school campus.

Chalkbeat New York reports that the Queens Innovation Center will accommodate students attending four co-located high schools.

The schools:

  • The Motion Picture Technical High School, which focuses on film and television careers

  • Gotham Tech High School, a three-year-old school that specializes in robotics
  • P993Q, which serves students with significant learning challenges.

The six-story, 3,066-seat facility is part of an effort to address crowding in New York City schools.

The campus features 94 classrooms, 18 special education classrooms, two speech rooms, a 550-seat auditorium, two cafeterias, a library, gymnasium, dance rooms, a weight room, science labs, music and art rooms and outdoor recreational areas.

Gotham Tech High School trains students in science and technology, and the Motion Picture Technical High School will offer pathways into the film and television industry. Queens residents will receive enrollment priority.

Northwell High School, launched with support from Northwell Health and Bloomberg Philanthropies, will prepare students for public health careers.

The Queens Innovation Center’s 3,066 seats are among nearly 27,000 added under Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, according to the New York City School Construction Authority.
