Sacramento district opens first new school in nearly 2 decades

The Sacramento City (California) district is opening Cesar Chavez Elementary, the first new school built in nearly two decades.

CBS News Sacramento reports that the campus combines two previous schools on one site: Edward Kimble Elementary, which was more than 60 years old, and Chavez Intermediate, which consisted entirely of portable classrooms. It will have about 800 students.

Cesar Chavez Elementary has 35 classrooms and an indoor sports court.

When students return to campus next week, there will still be construction going on. The playgrounds are just a pile of dirt, along with what's supposed to be a two-acre soccer field.

Cesar Chavez is one of three new school construction projects sedt to open this year. Money for constructio comes from a $750 million bond passed by voters in 2020.
