Officials in Washington, D.C., have broken ground on a $22 million addition to Barnard Elementary School.

Mayor Muriel Bowser says the project will enable the school to eliminate the use of temporary trailers, bring all students under one roof, and provide access to modern and  sustainable learning environments.

Set to be completed by July 2026, the 21,000-square-foot addition will have 12 general education classrooms, a hands-on “specials lab,” dedicated special education spaces, and sustainability features such as a green roof and bioretention ponds.

The architect is Ashley McGraw Architects and the builder is GCS-Sigal.

Washington D.C.'s fiscal 2026 budget includes $2 billion for 30 school modernizations, $148 million for small capital improvements such as HVAC and window replacements, and $10.7 million to replace and modernize school technology.
