A $103 million Long Lots Elementary will replace an aging facility.

The Representative Town Meeting in Westport, Connecticut, has approved construction of a new $103 million building to replace Long Lots School.

The Register Citizen reports that the new Long Lots campus will replace one that has deteriorated to the point where some classrooms are off limits because of mold contamination.

Plans to replace the old school have been in the works for several years, and $6 million has already been allocated to the project, bringing the overall total budgeted to $109 million.

A 128,000-square-foot facility will be built next to the existing one on Hyde Lane. The new building is expected to be ready in 2027.

The existing building has some classrooms that are one-third the size of comparable classrooms in other elementary schools in the district, Superintendent Thomas Scarice said. With several classrooms closed because of mold, the district has used portable classrooms to meet the space demands.

Once construction is complete, plans call for razing the existing building and completing the work on athletic fields and parking areas.
