The Litchfield (Arizona) Elementary District has held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of an elementary school in Litchfield Park.

KTAR News reports that Troy Gilbert Elementary School is expected to open in August 2026.

Officials say the new campus will accommodate 1,100 K-8 students and help relieve crowding concerns at district schools.

Some of the schools have had to use libraries as classrooms to fit all the students.

Troy Gilbert Elementary will be the district’s 17th school building.

The school has been named for a local U.S. Air Force pilot: Maj. Troy Gilbert, who was killed in combat in Iraq in 2006. He was stationed at nearby Luke Air Force Base.
