The New Bedford (Massachusetts) school district has begun construction of a $120 million elementary campus that will replace two aging facilities.

South Coast Today reports that Congdon-DeValles Elementary School will replace two 100-plus-year-old school buildings:  Congdon and DeValles schools.

“We’re finally going to do this," said Bruce J. Oliveira, New Bedford School Committee member. "It’s been a while."

Superintendent Andrew B. O’Leary said that when he started teaching at DeValles 20 years ago he was told a new school was going to be built across the street.

“I should have said, well, I’ll be superintendent by the time that happens.”

The Massachusetts School Building Authority has contributed $70 million toward the $120 million project.

The new campus is scheduled to open in January 2027.

The architect is Turowski2 Architecture.
